Rita and John Montreaux are at the peak of their careers and social status, yet they are unable to do the one thing they want the most - have a baby of their own. Rita and Maggie come together, as a black woman and a white woman, and try to surmount differences. Reluctant Miracle explores how two couples negotiate change and conflict.

The setting for the book is rural Kansas as well as the college town of the University of Kansas. The metropolitan area of Kansas City is featured as well.
